“Are Geta Sandals Painful?”

A More Comfortable Way to Wear Japanese Wooden Sandals

Summer festivals and fireworks season have arrived — a time when the heart feels lighter.
If you’re thinking about wearing yukata or embracing summer style but wondering, “What should I wear on my feet?”

 — we have an answer.

mizutori creates modern Japanese wooden sandals, known as geta, designed to complement both Western and traditional attire while offering exceptional comfort. They slip on as easily as sandals and blend naturally into everyday life — allowing you to enjoy Japanese tradition in a contemporary way.
Still, many people hesitate.

“Aren’t geta uncomfortable?”

We understand that concern.
At mizutori, we have listened carefully to such voices and continually refined our designs with one goal in mind: to create geta that are gentle on the feet.

Five Reasons mizutori Geta Are Designed for Comfort

  1. Wider Hanao and Toe Post
The toe post (maetsubo), which sits between the toes, can cause pressure when too narrow. We intentionally design it slightly thicker and make the hanao straps wider overall, helping distribute pressure more evenly across the foot.
  2.  Cushioned Hanao
Hidden within the straps is soft cushioning material, allowing the foot to feel gently supported rather than compressed.
  3. Soft, Skin-Friendly Materials
For areas that touch the skin directly, such as the lining of the hanao, we carefully select smooth, flexible materials that reduce friction during extended wear.
  4. Contoured Wooden Base
mizutori geta feature subtle three-dimensional carving that follows the natural arch of the foot. This enhances stability, improves balance, and reduces fatigue while walking.
  5. Adjustable Fit Available
For those concerned about sizing, we offer custom hanao adjustments upon request. By letting us know your needs at the time of order, we can prepare a pair tailored more closely to your feet.

A Small Tip for Even Greater Comfort

Comfort can vary depending on foot shape, skin sensitivity, and even climate. While we strive to minimize discomfort, individual experiences may differ.
For added protection, we recommend wearing half socks. They help prevent friction between the toes, absorb perspiration, and keep your geta cleaner. Changing sock colors can also add a subtle accent to your outfit.
At the mizutori online shop, we also carry SASAWASHI five-toe half socks, woven from washi paper blended with kumazasa (bamboo grass). Their light, breathable texture pairs beautifully with geta.
