mizutori creates modern Japanese wooden sandals (geta) designed for comfort and everyday wear.
Episode 12
The “Geta Uncle”
Today, we would like to share a warm story about the former president of mizutori — affectionately nicknamed “the Geta Uncle.”
By learning about the early days of mizutori, we hope the geta we create today may feel a little closer to you.

Traveling Across Japan in Geta Season
From spring through summer — the season for geta — the former president traveled each year from Hokkaido in the north to Kagoshima in the south, appearing at artisan exhibitions and yukata fairs held in department stores across Japan.
Ginza in Tokyo. Umeda in Osaka. Tenjin in Fukuoka.
Wherever he went, he dressed in a traditional samue (a simple Japanese work garment) and carried a small drawstring pouch. He spoke in his regional dialect and never put on airs. That was simply his way.
Before long, customers began calling him, with affection, “the Geta Uncle.”
A Little Blunt — Yet Somehow Endearing
He could be somewhat blunt. He said exactly what he thought. Some customers may have been surprised at first.
But there was something disarming about his honesty. As the annual events became a tradition, more and more familiar faces returned — almost as if they were coming to visit a favorite uncle.
Some brought small gifts.
Some traveled all the way to our workshop in Shizuoka.
A few even sent seasonal presents.
For example, when a customer struggled to find a pair that fit perfectly, he might say quite directly:
“If they don’t feel right, it’s your foot shape — not the geta.”
And then, almost immediately:
“Don’t worry. I’ll make them comfortable for you.”
Perhaps this was his own unique style of customer service.
The Spirit He Left Behind
His straightforward nature — along with his deep confidence in and affection for the geta he made — gradually won people’s hearts.
mizutori continues to cherish that warm, approachable spirit of the “Geta Uncle” to this day.
Times may change. Designs may evolve.
But the feeling at the core remains the same.
So if you have concerns about your feet, please don’t hesitate to speak with us.
Like the “Geta Uncle,” we will help you find a pair that fits you just right.
This summer, why not experience mizutori geta that fit comfortably and feel truly your own?
