Episode 17
A Serendipitous Encounter with a Renowned Designer

A Question That Changed Everything
At the time, our former president — affectionately known as “the Geta Uncle” — was conducting one of his annual summer in-store demonstrations at a department store in Tokyo.
One day, a woman stopped at the mizutori display. She stood quietly, studying the geta before finally speaking.
“Ojisan, can you make geta?”
When he looked up, he saw a refined woman wearing a distinctive turban wrapped gracefully around her head. She was, in fact, a world-renowned bridal fashion designer.
An Unexpected Request
Her request was extraordinary: a special pair of geta for models to wear in an upcoming fashion show.
She envisioned a chic black-lacquered base paired with luxurious gold brocade fabric for the hanao straps.
For the man affectionately known as “the Geta Uncle,” far removed from the world of high fashion, it was a request beyond imagination.
Though surprised, he answered in his usual straightforward way:
“Of course we can.”
With that simple reply, the project began — and when the workshop received the news, excitement and nervous energy filled the air.
Presented with the exquisite obi fabric sent by the designer, our team poured even greater care than usual into crafting a pair worthy of the elegance of bridal couture.
Craftsmanship Behind the Scenes
Special attention was given to the sole.
On a runway, the distinctive sound of wooden footwear could disrupt the show. To ensure a quiet, graceful walk, we selected a thicker EVA sole with enhanced cushioning.
The result was a custom-made pair — silent, comfortable, and refined.
The completed geta were worn on the runway as part of the show’s styling. Our former president was invited to attend and witnessed firsthand the moment mizutori’s craftsmanship stepped onto a global stage.
The Encounters That Geta Bring
It was a dreamlike connection — one brought about through geta.
It became one of “the Geta Uncle’s” favorite stories to tell. More than that, it served as a reminder that one never knows where a connection may lead.
Since we began creating mizutori geta, we have been fortunate to experience many unexpected encounters.
The phrase “Leading to new encounters” carries those lived experiences within it. It is also our quiet hope that, when you step out in mizutori, new connections and moments of delight may find their way to you.
