A Story of Returning to Our Roots — and Reinventing Them. (Part Two)
The development of Geta Monogatari was a continuous process of trial and refinement.
We began by reconsidering the traditional, symmetrical shape of geta. Instead, we adopted a left-and-right-specific form, similar to sandals, designed to follow the natural shape of each foot.
On the top surface of the wooden base — where the foot rests — we carved subtle contours to support the natural curves of the sole. This detail was made possible by the expertise we had cultivated over many years of crafting sandal and shoe insoles.

We also paid particular attention to the hanao straps, often cited as the source of discomfort.
They were intentionally designed slightly wider and filled with soft cushioning material.
This significantly reduced pressure between the toes and across the instep, improving the common issue of chafing.
For the outsole — the part that touches the ground — we selected a resilient synthetic rubber.
While retaining the integrity of wood, this addition created a gentler feel underfoot and allowed for repairs, ensuring the geta could be worn and cherished for years.
Through repeated prototyping and careful adjustments, we arrived at a unique combination of wooden base and strap — one that gently envelops the entire foot, creating a fit unlike anything before.

The Story Behind the Name
As the design neared completion, one thing was still missing: a name.
Production was ready. The product was ready. But as we prepared for launch, we found ourselves searching for the right words.
At that moment, the previous president’s eldest daughter — then a high school student — casually suggested:
“What about Geta Monogatari?”
The idea was inspired by a shampoo brand at the time that included the word “Monogatari” (story) in its name.
Yet the suggestion resonated deeply with us.
In facing the challenges of a changing era, in gathering our experience and knowledge to create new value, there truly had been a story.
Thus, born from our determination, craftsmanship, and family ties, Geta Monogatari received its name and was finally introduced to the world.
The development of Geta Monogatari became the foundation upon which today’s mizutori brand stands.
